Adoration of the Christ Child

The artist has excerpted the child and mother from the traditional Brigittine nativity image (explained here) and placed it in an imaginary setting where the child's divinity is proclaimed by the Father, the Holy Spirit, and St. John the Baptist, who carries a banderole with the words ecce agnus dei, "Behold the lamb of God."

St. John is pictured as a boy, identified by the long cross, the camel-skin tunic, and of course the words on the banderole. The monk in the lower right is identified by the museum's label as St. Romuald.
